Future Patterns
Islamic Geometric Patterns can be described as a form of artistic surface decoration consisting of repeating geometric and organic patterns which form rhythmic and ornate motifs. Such motifs are normally created through drawing, painting or carving of natural materials such as ceramic, stone, plaster and wood.
This project seeks to create a new narrative of representation for this regional aesthetic. Moving away from the usual solid materials that form the basis of these patterns, the work deploys less tangible modes of representation, namely light and movement. The material elements of the patterns (traditionally pronounced such as wood or stone), are no longer prominent. Interlacing patterns are formed through lights and kinetics, and are brought forward as the primary modes of representation.
Movement is generated through having two opposing rotations of ‘pattern formations’ around a single access. Ring bearings are used for allowing these 2 uni-axial rotations - having one hollow axis around the bearing, and another solid axis within. Stepper motors and belts connect to each of the axes and their movement is synchronised through a single control board signalling the motor drivers.
