naturalesque

In The Naturalesque Collection presents a series of tiles that seek to create a new narrative of representation for this regional aesthetic.  Moving away from the usual solid materials that form the basis of these patterns, the work deploys less tangible modes of representation, namely light and movement.  The material elements of the work are no longer prominent, and the less tangible aspects such as light, interlacing forms through kinetics are bought forward to become the primary mode of representation.

Through the use of responsive technology, the work integrates the body as a medium, with human interaction required to activate the spinning motion of the tiles. Only through this communication between body and technology are the tiles triggered, transforming the work into a kinetic embodiment of the graphical layering that forms the basis of static arabesque patterns.

The project is a part of the Tanween Design Programme hosted by Tashkeel, 2016.
