The predicament

This work is an experimental project to test the effect of automated motion on abstracted sculptural artwork and gauge its attractiveness to viewers. The focus was to be on the movement, its complexity, harmony, attention grabbing effect as opposed to focusing on the object that moves.

A cultural narrative was selected as basis for design development. Out of which, the final composition consisted of 18 ‘skeletal hands’ dangling as if they were amputated and displayed for some sinister purpose. Nonetheless the rhythmic movement as anticipated turned out captivating and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Perhaps the juxtaposition of the eerie skeletons and the harmonious dance also gave further strength to the work.  The installation became a winning entry of a local gallery’s call for projects (Maraya Art Centre) and was showcased both locally in the Emirates and internationally.
